RosieQueen Latifah was created by Dana Elaine Owens in Newark, New Jersey, on March 18, 1970. The second daughter of Lance and Rita Owens, Latifah is best known for her social politics, acting skills and gift for rhyme. When she was 8 years young, a Muslim friend gave her the nickname Latifah which means "delicate and sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah started singing in the choir of Shiloh Baptist Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and performed for the first time in public in which she sang a version of "Home" as one of the two Dorothys in a stage production of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's parochial school. Her mother was a key influencer and she kept in touch with the students as well as the music. Mark James, the local disc jockey, was contacted by Latifah to perform during the dance. Mark the 45 King was asked to sing at a school dance.
